Beginner friendly Pilates at Power of Pilates

New to Pilates? You’re in the right place.

If you’re brand new to Pilates, coming back after a break, or you’re not sure where to start, this page is for you.

We teach beginners every day at our studios in Lower Earley, Reading and Crowthorne. You don’t need to be flexible. You don’t need to be fit. You don’t need to know the exercises before you arrive.

Our job is to help you move well, build strength safely and feel comfortable in class from the beginning.

The biggest question most new clients ask us is: should I start with Mat Pilates or Reformer Pilates?

The honest answer is that both can be a good place to start. It depends on your body, your confidence and the type of class you think you’ll enjoy most.

5 stars isn’t enough. Claire and all the instructors are so supportive. I feel stronger and more confident every time I come to class. Jemima W

Mat or Reformer Pilates: which should you choose?

Both Mat and Reformer Pilates can help you build strength, improve posture and move with more control. The main difference is how the class feels.

Mat Pilates is done on a mat on the floor. It uses your own body weight and sometimes small equipment. It is a great choice if you want a lower-cost way to build strength and mobility, and you’re comfortable getting up and down from the floor.

Reformer Pilates uses a Pilates machine with springs, straps and a moving carriage. It might look more complicated, but many beginners find it very supportive because the machine helps guide the movement.

Choose Reformer Pilates if:
• you would like a smaller class with more individual guidance
• you prefer using equipment rather than exercising only on the floor
• you want a full-body class that feels structured and supported
• you are curious about the Reformer and want to learn properly from the start

Choose Mat Pilates if:
• you want a simple, lower-cost way to start Pilates
• you are happy exercising on a mat
• you want to improve posture, core strength and mobility
• you would like plenty of weekly class options at our Lower Earley studio

Still not sure? That’s completely normal. Most people aren’t sure before their first class. If you want more personal attention, start with Reformer. If you want the most affordable way to begin, start with Mat. If you have an injury or you feel nervous, a private 1:1 can be a good first step.

Beginner Reformer Pilates class at Power of Pilates in Reading and Crowthorne

Beginner Reformer Pilates

Reformer Pilates uses a specially designed Pilates machine. The springs add resistance, but they can also support you. That is why the Reformer can work so well for beginners.

In your first classes, we’ll show you how the machine works, explain the springs and guide you through the exercises step by step. You won’t be expected to know what to do.

Our Reformer classes are small, with a maximum of 9 people in Lower Earley and 8 people in Crowthorne. That means your instructor can keep an eye on you and help you feel confident.

Best for: beginners who want clear guidance, small classes, a supported full-body workout and a little more individual attention.

Beginner Mat Pilates class at Power of Pilates in Lower Earley Reading

Beginner Mat Pilates

Mat Pilates is done on a mat on the floor using your own body weight, sometimes with small equipment such as bands, balls or Pilates rings.

It is a brilliant way to learn the foundations of Pilates, build core strength and improve how your body moves day to day.

All of our Mat Pilates classes are suitable for beginners. Your instructor will give options, so you can work at the right level for your body.

Best for: beginners who want a lower-cost option, enjoy exercising on the floor and would like to build strength, mobility and posture in a friendly class setting.

What happens in your first Pilates class?

We know walking into a new class can feel a bit daunting. We keep it simple.

Before class: book your place online and complete your short intake form, so we know about anything important before you arrive.

When you arrive: come a few minutes early. We’ll show you where to go, where to leave your things and what equipment you need.

During class: your instructor will talk you through the exercises clearly. You can ask questions. You can take breaks. You never have to push through anything that doesn’t feel right.

After class: most people feel like they’ve worked, but not been battered. You may notice your posture, your breathing and how your body feels.

Please wear comfortable clothes you can move in. Grip socks are required for Reformer classes and recommended for Mat classes.

Private beginner Pilates 1 to 1 session at Power of Pilates

Would a 1:1 be better to start?

Some people are happy to start straight away in a group class. Others prefer a private session first. Both are fine.

A private 1:1 can be helpful if you have an injury, have had surgery, feel very nervous, are pregnant or postnatal, or simply want someone to talk you through the basics before joining a class.

In a 1:1, we can look at how your body moves, answer your questions and suggest the best class route for you.

Beginner Pilates questions we’re asked all the time

Do I need to be flexible?
No. Pilates helps improve mobility and control over time. You do not need to be flexible before you start.

Am I too old to start Pilates?
No. We teach adults of all ages. The important thing is choosing the right class and working at the right level for your body.

I’m not very fit. Will I keep up?
Yes. Our beginner-friendly classes are taught with options. You can take your time, rest when needed and build gradually.

Is Reformer Pilates good for beginners?
Yes. Although the machine can look intimidating at first, it is very supportive when taught properly. Many beginners love it because the class is small and structured.

Is Mat Pilates good for beginners?
Yes. Mat Pilates is a great way to learn the basics, improve strength and work on posture and mobility without needing a machine.

What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothes you can move in. Leggings, joggers, a T-shirt or vest are all fine. You do not need anything fancy.

Do I need grip socks?
Yes for Reformer Pilates. We also recommend them for Mat Pilates. They help with hygiene and give you better grip.

Can I come if I have back pain or an injury?
Often yes, but it depends on the person and the injury. Please tell us before you book. If you have a medical condition, recent surgery or ongoing pain, we may suggest a private 1:1 first or ask you to get medical clearance.

Which studio should I choose?
Lower Earley offers both Mat and Reformer Pilates. Crowthorne is Reformer only. Both studios have free parking.

How often should beginners do Pilates?
Once a week is a good start. If you want to progress more quickly, twice a week can work well. The most important thing is consistency.
