Power of Pilates has gone Pink!

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness month (October) and Lung Cancer awareness (November), Power of Pilates is holding a 'pink' week from 17 - 21 November. We would love you all to take part by wearing pink to the class and a donation box will be available for those of you who would like to help contribute to the valuable research. Just think, if everyone in the classes donated just £1.00, we could raise over £250.00 over the week.

Are you sitting comfortably?!

When seated for long periods it is essential that your back is supported from the lumbar region to at least your shoulder blades. Pressure exerted on the spine changes dramatically as you move; the diagram below shows - with the greatest pressure being exerted as you sit forward - look familiar??!

Here's a few tips to help you achieve a good seated posture:

1. Feet should be resting on the floor with knees and hips bent 90 degrees. Knees should never be higher than the hips.

2. If the seat (e.g. a sofa) is particularly wide, place a cushion behind your back to bring you forward. Your feet should support you on the floor; leaning back with your feet hanging off the edge is not a good option for your back!

3. Don't slouch! Maintain a neutral arch in the lower back. If you are not sure what this is, over arch your back, then push into the back of the chair and find the midway point. A "lumbar roll" is recommended to support the lower back.

4. Your shoulder blades should be down in back. Think of the bottom tips of your shoulder blades as "anchors," helping you to maintain an upright posture.

5. Keep your chin level and your neck lengthened. If it helps, picture a book on your head. The highest point of your body should be the top back region of your head.
