Pilates and Back pain Study from the ACSM

"I must be right. Never an aspirin. Never injured a day in my life. The whole country, the whole world, should be doing my exercises. They'd be happier” Joseph Pilates, 1965 age 86

Two studies presented at the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) annual Meeting showed that Pilates shows promising benefits including increased flexibility, improved quality of life and some reduction of lower back pain.

The study that looked at benefits of Pilates-based mat exercises which involved 22 people with lower back pain over a 12-week period. "We saw that the lower back pain was significantly decreased in certain areas of the lower spine," said lead researcher, Susan Graves, Ed.D.

The American College of Sports Medicine is the largest sports medicine and exercise science organisation in the world.
